Setting myself for a lot of attacks here but:
Why is it that every Ivy league school plus U of Chicago, Stanford Cal, etc. are in blue states? LA, NY and Chitown are in blue states? I won't get into the culture issue, either. I don't want to get into Dem vs. GOP here b/c I actually consider myself a fiscal Republican and a social Dem. But looking at the blue and red map is kind of telling. I won't name specific states but... is the rest of the country pointing their finger in their general direction and weakly asking, "Come on! I mean, really?"

I actually really like sociald's answer b/c I didn't think about it that way. Most of the freeloaders probably do live in those places. But surely there must be some social component to this problem, ie:why people in red states DON'T believe in evolution, or can mistake DNA evidence for blood type at a trial and people use the word "truck" and "car" interchangeably b/c everyone really needs to drive an SUV to their office job at 11mpg. And I did like "Why we fight", BTW.

In general I think that liberals are more educated, but that doesn't mean they're right. A lot of times, simple, traditional values are the best answer. And when you're too smart for your own good a lot of times you'll think you know how to fix everything and make up schemes that are too complicated to actually work. Just look at how broken welfare is. The key isn't determining who's right and who's wrong, it's finding the rational arguments from both sides and combining them.

I would say the whole red state-blue state thing is a pile of garbage. I am from Pennsylvania and we are a blue state but Bush only lost Pa by about 1 or 2% if I am mistaken. Without Pittsburgh and Philly we would be a solid red state. I think that is how most of America is. As far as universities, there are a lot of great universities in red states. I would say that a lot of elite universities are in blue states would be because the Northeast is the oldest part of the country and the universities have been there longer.

I think a great point that the video "Why we Fight" made is that red and blue states is just a neat way of keeping the country divided. Really when you look at it, as you go community to community all across the nation you will find a "red" county next to a "blue" county. That being said the University types are historically very liberal.

Well in Nashville Tennessee you have Vanderbilt University.
In Durham, North Carolina, you have Duke University and in Atlanta, Georgia you have Georgia Tech all noted for academic excellence and in red states. A lot of major universities have obvious liberal professors on the campuses. People in the red states are pretty much conservative but certainly not all as each area is different.

It just goes to show we have a lot of work to do with our educational system. We are really bad at math and science. We have absolutely no excuse except that wealth distribution is absolutely abominable nowadays. People are working more for less with little hope. That's a lot of people. (not just a few)

The redcoats/ states/republicans are ENGLISH and we ran those rats out of our country once, I say we do it again.
Look what they did to our country now that we had another one in the white house for 8 years! CORRUPTION on EVERY LEVEL.
Now, I do not wonder how hitler did it.
(I did before baby bush and cheney)

Instead of looking at it as red/blue states, try counties:

Try getting out of the city every now and then...
