wouldn't it be wiser for the government to set up commitees with representives from all parties to try and solve these ills rather than think only they have the solutions?

Robert C....If one party initiates tough policies the others will criticise it, if they are all part of the decision the law can be implemented without further bickering. If they all agree, things might get done.

These problems ultimately arise from within the criminal. Some people grow up in terrible conditions and turn out well; for others, it's the opposite.

Government has many welfare programs, free public schooling, free clinics, and affordable colleges, with needs-based scholarships available.

Still, when the culture around you is a failure, it's hard to rise above it and see the possibilities beyond it. The movie "Freedom Writers" shows that. These school kids were tightly grouped by ethnicity. They did it to themselves, even to the point where a witness to a murder was going to pin it on an innocent man because the murderer belonged to her ethnic group, but the innocent man wasn't. The teacher taught them Anne Frank's Diary of a Young Girl and got them to look beyond their tiny world and see what damage prejudice can do. She changed their lives.

But not all teachers are so inspired.

My point is, their futures were changed not because their circumstances were changed, but because their minds were changed.

And yes, the government can influence this. They do, with the programs I've outlined above, and with police and prisons. In Virginia, we have a law that if you use a gun in the commission of a crime (felony?), you get 5 years automatically. It has drastically reduced gun crimes. Guess what: criminals are able to control themselves. They are not victims of their environment.

Of course, there are limits to the punishments gov't should mete out; prison is not the solution for every crime. Also, those who want to retool their thinking should have some help doing so. But I have a friend in prison and guess what: not everybody wants to retool their thinking. Most blame "the man" or "the system" or some variation on that theme for their being in prison. Very few blame themselves. Some people, you just can't help.

I don't think politicians are capable of dealing with the issue anyway.

We have never addressed the real issue of crime in this country which is whether individuals give up certain rights by their actions.

For example, if someone carries a gun...whether they use it or not, shouldn't they lose their right to be challenged before being shot?

If rights were to carry responsibilities you lose your rights by breaking the law...we might see some change in society.

Vandals should be beaten to within an inch of their lives.

No more committees ! - we need to have sentences to fit the crime rather in the manner of Judge Jeffreys ie Give them a fair trial and hang them !

We need to get the drugs off the streets. Why should they try to solve anything, when they are sitting on their backsides, getting rich.
