the theory is u can add 2 variables which is x as long as the exponent is the same on this case -7x-x regardless of the sign whether plus or minus (on this case exponent is 1) thus

-7x-x=-8x

It's minus 7x (plus) minus 1x. -7x (+) -1x = -8x (ans).
