What do you use to protect them against the elements and time?

Great answers so far, myself I use mylar. From a camera store. You can seal the sleeves after you put something in it and if you have one, vacuum seal it. It will never oxidize. It will over time in plastic because of plastics composition. Anything of value should be stored in mylar. I use it for coins, but precious papers, books and other items should all, in my opinion be sealed in mylar. Question wasn't for me but for you!

Always protect them in acid-free and lignin-free covers and
bindings. I do a lot of scrapbooking and this is one thing the
teacher tells everyone to do. Also, never glue anything down.
I use special photo safe tape for that. Always make copies of
everything, in case an original is lost or damaged. Clear plastic covers that are photo safe protect them from damage.
Put the most valuable stuff in a safe, or safe-deposit box.

Wally dear, never use regular paper. You can purchase non acidic tissue paper from an arts and crafts store. Use that, as the acid in most cardboard's, and papers will leach out the color in the print. And, NEVER put a photo up against the glass in a frame!

The same goes for books, no cardboard boxes! Non-acid materials only! And, you can put them in the microwave for a minute only... to kill any mites that may have gotten to them! Do not do this with originals as the ink may have medal in it!

Put them in plastic sheet protectors/holders that are marked either "acid-free" or "archival safe"

You'll find some items at office supply stores such as Staples and Office Depot and also at places like The Container Store.

Oh my gosh Wally... I have boxes among boxes of papers, letters, kids school work, photos and never seem to be able to get it together. I'm hoping when the kids get older I'll have time for that...it makes me crazy!!! One lesson I learned the hard way is to not save letters spelled out with cheerios... I had some in a desk in the garage from my son's pre-k year and found out that opposums like cheerios!

I have taken all my families precious papers, photos, etc. and have scanned them into the computer, saved them as jpg and published them through Cherish Bound in hardbound books. I store the originals that cannot be thrown out and I toss other misc. papers that don't need to be saved. Cherish Bound archives my books and keeps them stored in case my books every become damaged or lost.

I got a chuckle from you question cause I have saved every report card, every award, every card they sent me,every newspaper they got into for making good grades or whatever. When my oldest got into radio and TV and he made the papers often since he did things for the troops and donations for the poor, and contests for the public, he sent me the clippings and I saved them all,I still had all my engagement and wedding cards, my and hubby's yearbooks and napkins and stuff from all our trips, plus letters he sent, letters my parents sent and letters from the many foreign students we had had over the yrs. I put them in my hopechest and they have lived there for many, many yrs, my winter project will be to throw out all the cards, and what I already did was I took 3 bags, and gave each child their report cards etc. and when they came to visit they each had a bag of memories. They are all over 40 now and hadn't seen the stuff since they 1st got them.

I use acid free folders & boxes. I have alot of old pictures and newspaper articles to protect. I have written a family history book and transferred all of my genealogy to cd pictures and all just in case. Many family members have received that from me to give to their children in the future. I do scan all documents just in case originals are lost or destroyed.

I use the scrap booking technique, too. Problem is I am about 45 years behind on my scrapbooks.

I believe you mentioned this to me before and I wasn't sure where to pick it up. Thanks for the info! I have many old papers and such that really need to be stored safely. Coins too... interesting!
