I was born here. I have traveled the world so I can objectively compare living here versus living elsewhere.

And on all occasions, I say that I would not want to live elsewhere. We have all the comforts of a first-world country here. We live well, in fact better than in other countries because we do not have to do all of the household chores - - we can get househelp and drivers and gardeners to help us around the house.

The country is beautiful. The city center compares well with other countries, my foreign friends are more than impressed with Greenbelt, for example. The countryside is so beautiful that foreign guests can only gasp.

Peace and order might be a little problem to fearful foreigners. But I say we are just as "problematic" as other countries on earth.

Overall, I find living in the Philippines to be the best for me.

The Good and the Bad:
1) Never seen friendlier people. Little racial disctrimination- amazing for an Asian country because racism is rife in Asia.
2) A very strange combination of Latin, Asian and Anglo Saxon cultures each one balancing the other- like a perfect triangle- not too Asian, not too American and not too Latin.
3) Great shopping, good clothes, shows and other goods. Good international restaurants.
4) Very cheap.
5) Local ladies date foreigners. In other Asian countries it is difficult.
6) The people are uncomplicated. You are nice to them and they are nice to you. Easy to get along with.

Bad:

1) The old architecture has been replaced with lots of newer buildings that are not very pretty. In other Spanish colonies they have preserved it more. Many forest have been cut down.
2) The beaches are not easy to get to- you always need to go to "resorts" to swim. Lots of mangrove ( nilad) trees tangling up the shores. Where there are no mangrove trees the sand is brown or there are corals. In the Carribean or even Europe a sealine means white sand beach. In the Philippines you need to have big money to get to a white sand beach.
3) You go to a restaurant , ask for a menu and sometimes one third of items are not available.
4) Bad traffic in big cities.
5) Drivers sometimes overcharge foreigners or out of towners.
6) If people borrow money from you, they often do not pay it back. Also, people ask you many personal questions.

Just those.

I love the Philippines, even with its problems. The beauty of the country side, the friendly people, the tropical weather. I think it's great.

philippines? don't try your luck when going around manila because the taxi drivers will rip you off. don't look so glam and rich while standing on the side streets because the snatchers will snatch your purse and run and no one will help you. the food is all over thje streets and they are not sanitized so most likely you get stomach virus. you see kids running and crowding the whole are anywhere and they would wipe your shoes and beg and the government is so useless they can't do anything to help these poor kids. some peopke are nice but don't trust them so much because they will stab you on the back..
