which video card is better for gaming the 512mb EVGA GeForce 8600 GTS , or the 256mb ATI Radeon HD 3850 and why?

the ATI.
Why?
It is a 256 bit card.
more bandwidth=more power.

i would forget both and get the 8800 GT though.

I'd suggest taking a look at the video game forums for the games you play and see if users have any feedback for those cards you listed. Often you'll see users praising or complaining about a particular card.

I used to use ATI, but recently found the nVidia based cards to be more in favor with many of the game developers for the games I play. That doesn't mean I won't buy an ATI again, just that I'm following what the developers of the games I play use.

it was tested by the pc magazine and 8800gts is the no3 in the rank after 8800gtx ultra and 8800gtx
