If he was recently sentenced (within 30 days), they can file a motion with the judge for reconsideration of sentence. Those rarely ever work though.

If you in the uk then i think you would need to put in an appeal against sentance which is a bit different to putting in an appeal against conviction you need to submit a form of notice and grounds to the crown court where he was sentenced within 28 days and they will hold a hearing to decide whether or not to refer it to the court of appeals who have the power to change or reduce the sentance. also if convicted after april 2005 then it is likely that the person would only serve half the time in prison and the second half of the sentence on license
