I have never taken antibiotics for the flu because it's a virus - same thing with a cold. Antibiotics don't help viruses and in fact do more harm than good if over prescribed.

Basically, the flu or a cold should last about two weeks. After two weeks you should start feeling a little better each day. A slight sore throat, post nasal drip, a slight cough and a runny nose are all normal for another week or more. If you continue to feel bad, have a fever, have any color but white/clear coming out of your nose, have a painful sore throat or a wet cough then it's time for a trip to the doctor and possibly some antibiotics.

Using saline nose spray and taking decongestants help prevent sinus infections and good hygeine can help prevent most of the others. Eating well and drinking lots of fluids and getting plenty of rest will help your body's immune system fight off potential infections. Yogurt is good for preventing infections and for helping your digestive tract return to normal after taking an antibiotic.

First of all, antibiotics don't cure the flu. If you are taking antibiotics you are wasting your time. Flu it is caused by a virus, and antibiotics don't kill a viruses.
The body takes care of the disease by itself, and medicine only helps you with the symptoms so you feel better. The best thing to do is get some rest, drink lots of liquids, and avoid alcohol and tobacco

Antibiotics can not help with the flu. The flu is caused by a virus not bacteria. There is no cure for the flu, only over the counter meds that can help relieve some of the symptoms.

The flu is not at all affected by antibiotics. The flu is viral not bacterial. Many docs have gotten into the rut of prescribing antibiotics for one of two reasons - patients insist, or they don't want to risk secondary bacterial infection.

Best ways to nip the flu in the bud:
1 tsp apple cider vinegar in a glass of apple juice once or twice daily. We usually just do it once at any sign of ill feeling and it goes away.
Chicken soup, preferably homemade with ginger, parsley, thyme and sage for spices.
Lots of clear liquids. If vomiting is bad, add a bit of sea salt to the water.
Garlic - make a butter with 1 tbsp butter and 1 crushed clove of garlic. Put it on some bread and grill it (not toast - it could ignite in your toaster)
Honey is amazing. A cup of ginger tea is very settling, and better than ginger ale, since it doesn't have refined sugar. Just use the ground ginger from the spice cabinet 1/4 tsp in a cup of hot water. Add 1/4 tsp or so of honey.

Antibiotics do not help the flu.

Just bundle up and sweat it out. Drink lots of liquids and
get lots of rest. Nighttime cold medicine helps to get through it easier because you'll sleep more.

Good Luck and God Bless

Antibiotics are not a solution in the case of flu, since flu is viral, not bacterial. I treat flu symptoms with diet, fluids, cool showers if fever is high, and ride it out.

antibiotics help rid bacteria only. Flu is a virus so antibiotics are useless anyway on flu

Most of the answers were good except for Kalos of course since he is against complementary medicine. Anti biotics are being over used causing bacteria to become resistant--do not use them for viral illness!!!! Elderberry extract has been shown with studies to reduce the symptoms and duration of the flu and other viral illness--it works. I also use lemon balm and other anti-viral herbs. Try Herb Pharm or Gaia Herbs--best extracts I have found( I am not affiliated with either company--just use their products). I personally do not find that homeopathic works well for me--but one of my daughters is very sensitve to energetic healing and they work well for her. Depends on you --I prefer herbs.
