Best thing to do is to by pass the heater core completely.

Two hoses that connect to the heater core can be found against the fire wall. Take the two hoses, disconnect them from the heater core and connect them to each other.

It'll just leak water. Bypass the heater core if you have to. Take the two hoses off the core and splice them together with a heater hose repair kit, or just run the top one to the nipple on the block that the bottom hose connects to. Just make sure there are no kinks in the hose.
But no heater core means no heat and no defrost.

Well one thing if your heater core is leaking, depends on location, could cause your windows to steam up. Also if it is leaking and not causing your windows to steam up, you'll have to keep an eye on your anti-freeze, this is what flows through the core to make the heat. But, if there are no leaks or blockages, the only thing you won't have is heat in the vehicle. Which in turn shouldn't affect the vehicle itself.

If it's leaking into the passenger compartment, you can simply disconnect the two heater hoses from the heater core at the firewall (passenger side) and then connect them directly together using the hose mend kit shown below with some stainless steel worm drive hose clamps.

A lot of time you can just bypass it by connecting the two lines together. This should stop the antifreeze from flowing through it and allow you to keep driving safely.

You'll have to drive with the heater off. If you try to run it, smoke and an oil-like residue will fill the inside of the car.

IS IT LEAKING OR STOPPED UP? IF IT IS STOPPED UP NO, YOU WON'T HAVE ANY HEAT. IF IT IS LEAKING, HOW BAD IS IT LEAKING? YOU DO NOT WANT TO RUN OUT OF COOLANT, WHICH WOULD BE WORSE THAN A BAD HEATER CORE. JUST KEEP TABS ON YOUR COOLANT LEVEL.
