Depending on what type of external drive you bought, the ones I have seen will have one that plugs into your external device such as a mini-dv plug or usb and then on the other end of the cord will split and have 2 usbs. In many cases this is for power reasons. If your computer is not putting out enough power to power your device then the second usb cord is needed to provide enough power. Having both plugged in will not change the speed as USB 2.0 already has a max capped speed. So if only one plugged in works for you then leave the other off to the side, but if you notice that it sometimes will not power on or the power light is dim, plug them both in.

hi adam
as previously mentioned you may one is the usb lead and the other could be a firewire lead, however i think it may be a ethernet lead incase you want to set up a "network storage device"
this is when you attach a external drive to your router/hub and the storage device works as a storage device for all p.c on that network
to use it you then need to configure your p.c(s) by mapping the network drives so you can send data to the network drive, most companys use network drives to back up all data and information, and since the introduction of massive storage devices home users have been able to set these up for relatively next to nothing
good luck adam !
