The north of Italy bears more resemblance to continental Europe than it does to southern Italy. The north is more mountainous and has cooler summers and colder winters and the land is green and lush. The people are a blend of Celtic, Germanic, Latin etc whereas the people in the south are more Latin with some north African influence. The south is warmer throughout the year and bears more resemblance to Greece or southern Spain with its Mediterranean scrub landscape. The north is wealthier and more developed. The way of life in the south is more relaxed with a more traditional Mediterranean feel.

Hmm...I think it's the south that is more agricultural and "generally" poorer part of Italy. It has some harsh landscapes and also prone to earthquakes as it borders two of the earths plates The north is more like "shopping", businessy and touristy. It is industrial. Also, as an average size countries there are differences in climate although I'm not quite sure on the specifics.

Italy has a diversified industrial economy with roughly the same total and per capita output as France and the UK. This capitalistic economy remains divided into a developed industrial north, dominated by private companies, and a less developed, welfare-dependent agricultural south, with 20% unemployment.

Ethnic groups: Italian (includes small clusters of German-, French-, and Slovene-Italians in the north and Albanian-Italians and Greek-Italians in the south)

In the North they use butter. In the South they use olive oil.
In the North they eat rice. In the South they eat pasta.

That's all you need to know.

Remember that Italy has only been united as a country since 1861. They whole country didn't even speak the same language until even more recently than that. What we consider to be standard Italian is actually a Tuscan dialect.

It's rather generalistic but traditionally the North/South divide that we recognise in the UK applies in Italy but the other way around with the North being historically wealthier than the South.

North is more economically developed with a larger proportion of the working population than the south, which has an older, more predominantly retired population than the north. It is less economically well developed and this is why young people and families are moving to the north for jobs and better financial security.

South has hotter weather and more problems with irrigation and drought.
