I think it's really cute and modern. Also it could be shortened to Trinn or Riv.

River, in most languages, is masculine. I too grew up with River Phoenix so it's hard for me to picture it as a girl's name. It has a very male quality to it.

Actress Keri Russell (from Felecity) recently named her son River too so when he grows up, if he decides to become famous like his mother, he's going to influence the world seeing River as a boy's name.

Why don't you just name your child Trinity (if you like the nickname Trinn)?

...or try the female version of River:

Ria (Spanish)
Riviera or Rivière (French)

You could also try something clever like:

Dream
Poem
Lyric
Story
Sunset
Sunshine

Or even name her after a specific river? Like the Tigris or Nile?

I automatically think of a guy because of River Phoenix. I have a hard time picturing that as a girl's name. I don't get how Trinn is short for River when there is no obvious relation between the two. Don't care for Riv either.

I don't really like that name for a boy, and especially not for a girl. I think that's a very masculine name. And how the heck are you getting Trinn from River??

How does River get shortened to Trinn?

To answer your question, I don't think much of it. And mean kids will call her Rover.

I think it's a shame when parents put a name on a child that they will surely be teased about.
Try this: Go to a function where no one knows you. When someone asks your name, say "River", and see what the response is.
I bet you dump the name quick.

I don't like it at all. I don't like the name River for a boy, much less a girl. It just doesn't sound femenine (not that all girl names have to). I don't know. For me it's along the lines of naming a kid Forest. Just whyyy?

Its nice,I like it! Very unusual but spunky and sophisticated at the same time. Forget those ppl who say its mostly a boy name.I think its a unisex name, meaning that it could go great for a boy or a girl.
