OK, so I know some squirrels can (mainly in Scotland)... But wouldn't you expect this characteristic to propagate faster through the population?

I have a few little squirrel friends. And they told me that they'd be perfectly happy without the laser beam eyes if the birds would just stay the eff out of the feeders that I have in my yard. LOL

Evolution is just natural selection taking the best of whats there. For a new feature to occur in an animal it takes mutation of the genes - specifically in the sex cells. The chances are quite unlikely although not when we are talking about an entire population. Therefor things that naturally fluctuate like size of legs, eyeshight are easy to change whereas laser beams...is quite a large jump.

Why would shooting laser beams be a benefit for squirrel survival? To make the beams effective they would need an enormous amount of food.
