Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics that studies how meaning is created between communicators, and how more gets communicated than is said.
So in the dialogue

A: Phone!
B: I'm in the bath!

the participants understand one another because they share a whole swathe of past experience and present knowledge which is not made explicit in the words they use - A is not just telling B that there is a phone in the house, and B is not simply informing him of her present whereabouts.
