When John Anderson ran as an independent for president in 1980, political cartoonist drew him as a zebra.
The donkey and elephant symbols have been around since Thomas Nast drew them to represent the political parties in the 19th century. Nast never caricatured any other political parties.

Unfortunately, not registering for a political party in many states only means that you don't get to vote in the primary. I think that being independent in actions and voting record is good but registering for party is good because you get to influence who is running.

Think it's about time more people woke up to the fact neither Rep. or Dem. are doing working people much good as far as what color they should be, the color blue is already taken, (as in blue mood), might as well be purple.
