I took Cosmetology in High School and was rather good at it. I never took the state exam, because I decide to become a sailor instead. I couldn't stand all the women back biting and talking bad about each other, so I choose a way out.
Anyway, have you ever done finger waves or bee hive hair do's.
My Granny used to tie my hair in little curls and use bobby pins. I looked like Shirley Temple

Mom did the spit curls with the criss crossed bobby pins. Maybe that is why my hair is curly today.

Good question. Here I go down memory lane again!

My aunt (10 years my senior) spent countless hours trying to give my straight and very stubborn hair the 'Shirley Temple' look. During the process, I was miserable (wanted to be outside) and she was frustrated (she's still a VERY stubborn lady). What a waste of time. As soon as I moved, it all fell out especially if the air was humid. She evidently didn't use the bobby pins.

I have photos of relatives with finger waves but I I never wore that style. During the era of the bouffant or bee hive, I was much too busy earning a living and raising children to do much with my hair. Clean and cut was the best I could do.

Now I live where it can be extremely windy so clean and cut is still my style.

No, I never did use those hair styles. My aunt had her hair done weekly with finger waves and always looked attractive in the 40's. I grew up during the "bee Hive" period and never had hair long enough to wear it that way, and there were always tall tales regarding the hair spray, etc, and people getting roaches and insects in their hair from such build-up. It made me laugh. I like to watch some of the 60's movies to see the bee hive hair styles. I always wore a "pixie" cut.

Interesting question. I understand about the back biting. That is common in women, myself being a woman as well. I stayed away from women like that or girls like that. Thus, most of the time I was a loner. I had two good friends and did not run in the "popular group" for the very reason you stated. I am glad you chose to join the navy.
I had a friend updo my hair for a piano recital one time. She used soap to hold up my short hair. I was about 12 at the time.

Happy Holidays.

I used to do pin curls with bobbie pins. I remember finger waves because that is what my grandmother had done at the beauty parlor back in the fifties. I remember the bee hive, but never had one. Even then, we thought they were a little extreme.

Back in the 60s I had a wiglet, remember those? My hair wasn't ever long enough so I used it to have a bee hive hair do. I thought I looked terrific. Back then hair pieces were very popular. I had a wig, a fall, and two wiglets. Good thing I had the wig. After my third child was born I had a huge bald spot, I really mean huge, in the middle of my head. I wore that wig almost two years waiting for it to grow in. Soon everyone thought it was my real hair.

Oh, the memories of those hair do's!

I had a beehive in High School for a Valentines formal. My mother always wore the beehive (very long hair) and wrapped it in toilet paper with a hairnet and clippies every night! She had it done once a week at the Beauty Parlor that my brother and sister in law owned. They both were cosmetologists for a time. Grandma had the finger waves she did herself and used clippies to hold it til it dried into place. Aqua Net hairspray was their best friend. At the beauty shop they used lacquer spray, stiff as a board Lol!

I've never had enough hair to do a beehive but admired the style on the girls. I have done the bobbypin thing and was happy when the flat clips came out. In the early fifties, while visiting my aunt who was a hairdresser, I had a cold wave permanent. Talk about having the crap scared out of me. I had these HOT clips on my head attached to long cords. I looked like Medusa! They actually gave the best perms.

As a young girl, my mom taught me how to do finger waves on the back of her head. I remember putting Nestle's waving lotion on her hair combing it through, then putting the finger waves in. As for doing the "bee hive" I didn't wear my hair in that style nor did my mom or sister. I did go to cosmetology school later in life, & learning to do finger waves was on the cirriculum, but the way I was shown, was so different than how my mom showed me. I used to set my mom's hair in pin curls many times, when she didn't feel like doing it. It was good practice for me. Rollers hadn't been invented then, but later I personally used them all through high school.

Can't say I did the finger waves. My mom always did the pin curls and I did do the be-hive thing. Fortunatly it was short lived for me and the natural do's became popular. I got spoiled with that and don't like anything more complicated than wash and blow dry now. I've had god awful home perms, slept (barely) with the curlers and orange juice cans, ironed my hair ( literal clothes iron ), walked around with burn marks from curling irons, lost wads of hair in the first hot curlers (getting tangled)...been sprayed, and gooped up more than I care to admit......lol enough now.

My Mom used to do the bobby pin curls. But they were the ones where she twirled them around in circles and laid them flat and criss crossed two bobby pins. I used to wear them all night and my hair looked-well, weird! Now I have the same ole bowl hair cut I have had since the 60's. Sigh.
