A sickly sweet smell could be a drain problem.Check out the trap under your sink waste for a starter.
If a washing machine is fed from the pipes which supply the sink taps,it's possible for odours to syphon back when the washer is in use.

German cockroaches also have a very unpleasant characteristic odor. The odor is so prevalent that a pest control operator can often smell an infestation inside a building before he sees any cockroaches.
You can clean all you want, if you live in a warm climate it's very hard to get rid of them. Move north!

uuhhh....I may be lighting a fire here, but.....there's a fungus called Meruliporia incrassata or Poria, it has a distinct sweet smell to it. I hope I'm wrong. See the site link for additional details.

If u live in a condo or apt, may be creeping in from their place thur the wall, under kit or bath sink.
