Well said, Jennifer! Put it where the sun doesn't shine, "Pierre"!

Well, most conservatives do not see Bush as a true conservative, as a "rightie" as you would say (BTW, that doesn't sound as good as "lefty").

I don't think that the 85% ethanol plan is a racket, at all! I think that it's totally ignorant! It will drive the retail price of foods and goods sky high. For it to have any impact whatsoever everyone in the USA would have to immediately trade in their cars and trucks for the ethanol powered vehicles, and THAT AIN'T HAPPENIN! The only way is through attrition, and we're looking at a minimum of 10 years but more like 15! There is a town about 30 miles from me that is in the process of having two (2) ethanol plants built! This little town has a population of around 10,000. What a boone to it's economy, but mostly to the farmers of the area. Now they will get, not only exorbitantly high prices for the corn they grow, but still getting all that farm subsidy, too! Aint this government great!

If ethanol is a "racket," how does Brazil fuel its cars almost exclusively with it?

Most corn in this country is grown by corporate farms. Does that answer your question about Bush's approval? But now he's got a dilemma: The demand for corn (to produce ethanol) is so high that corn prices have risen dramatically -- so much so that many Mexicans have trouble buying the corn meal they use to make tortillas. How are they going to sneak across our borders if they have nothing to eat?

I really don't know. Ethanol IS a racket considering 90% of the machinery used to make it is gas/diesel powered. It's like pouring gasoline into a gaint funnell and having ethanol drip out the bottom. By the way Pierre, we American's don't really care what you Brit's have to say about our President. Go tell it to the Queen Mother...

Im not a righty and agree ethanol is a racket....when you consider the amout of fuel consumed to produce the corn, transport it, process it into ethanol......you can argue that it may be more energy efficient to just consume the fuel

Ethanol 85 as a concept is very misguided. First, it includes gas in its formula, so it does nothing to ease the need for fossil fuels. It also gets terrible mileage. Further, since it's marketed as a replacement for gasoline, its cost will fluctuate with that of gasoline.

Just wanted to chime in as a lefty who sees ethanol as not just a racket, but a dangerous blind ally that will do allot more harm than good on many levels. Bush? I can't say I ever understood much of what he said or did as "President". I'm guessing he's a puppet with many rich and powerful masters, but who he's dancing for and to what ends...it's beyond me.

Its a bad idea. Total carbon emissions from ethanol is higher than that of oil. But the agricultural states are sometimes swing states. Both parties pander to them.

Because there are a lot of corn farmers in the red states that the Republicans depend on. It's a win-win. He can say he did something for the environment and buy some votes.
