You have a number of options which are worth investigating.

If you want to rent a house or a flat, the usual minimum lease is six months. If you are going to be here that long, that is an option worth looking at. If you get a house or a flat, you can always advertise for flatmates to help with the cost.

Student accommodation at the university. Sydney, for instance, has various residential colleges such as St Johns, St Pauls and St Andrews and the non-sectarian International House.

Share accommodation. Look at the advertisements for share accommodation in the paper or check the notice boards and the Student Centre at the university. Get in early for this as places are snapped up quickly.

Boarding. Some people offer accommodation and meals in their homes. Prices and quality varies.

For any of these, check the classified advertisements in the Sydney Morning Herald particularly on a Saturday. They are online at http://www.smh.com.au

As far as internet connection is concerned, any student house will have it. You can use any telephone line. If there are two or three of you in the house wanting internet access get all the computers networked so you can all run independently off the same line and connection.
