Will they fare any better than the Duke lacrosse players, who were the victims of a similar hoax/smear campaign?

"Not enough evidence to convict"?? Hell, there wasn't enough evidence even to bring an indictment! (or whatever the equivalent is in Netherlands law). There isn't even a BODY, fer krissakes! I say she may still be alive, and LAUGHING at the trouble she's caused these fine young men!

Well, that chick that lied about the rape is STILL ALIVE. Natalee has yet to be found, and thanks to all of the dead ends she may never be found - remains or whatnot.

May I please ask if you have a soul? Maybe these guys are innocent in this matter, but to say that the alleged victim herself is hiding someplace laughing is a little extreme - even for you!
Why would she do that to her family???

They haven't been completely exonerated. They will continue to live with the suspicion that they were somehow involved in her disappearance. They were the last people known to be with her and they have given different stories about what happened. The only reason the investigation was closed was due to a lack of evidence, not because they are innocent. I don't think there will ever be a resolution to this case until one of them confesses or a body is found.

There is a big difference between being "completely exonerated" (which was the case with the Duke Lacross players) and a prosecutor failing to gather enough evidence for a conviction.

I think they are two different cases, in the Duke case, there was evidence that they were innocent that was not admitted by the prosecutor, in the Aruba case, there is no specific evidence to prove them innocent....but they also don't have any evidence to prove them guilty that they can use in court. I think they did it, but were too slick and had help destroying the evidence. I don't think they have been "exonerated," the investigation is just closed because nothing to convict them has been found and they've given up.

At least the Duke lacrosse players WERE smeared. How many people know who these guys even are?

But I'm glad that they finally shut the case up. It says that people are now accepting that her body has not been found, and probably never will be.

hey, i think the consensus on van der sloot and kalpoe is plain and clear: there ain't no evidence, but there's quite a lot of reasonable suspicion. this means they cannot be legally punished but certainly they will be socially punished. on the flip side, there was some legal evidence (although it was hearsay) but not much reasonable suspicion in the duke lacrosse case. the evidence fell through and turned out to be false. they will not be legally or socially punished, whereas, like oj, van der sloot and kalpoe will always be believed to be murderers.

I think it’s horrible that the Aruba police cannot find enough evidence to charge these guys, or anyone else for that matter.

I think the police focused so much on these three that they may have missed any evidence about someone else entirely.

I’m guessing Aruba tourism is down lately, don’t you think?

They haven't been completely exonerated. There just isn't enough evidence to bring them to trial. EDIT ///////// How do you know they were fine young men? Did you know them?

They weren't exonerated, though. There was simply not enough evidence to prosecute.

Check your facts. There has been no exoneration.
