Most westerners leave their shoes on. Sorry they gave you a hassle about your house rules. When a guest in someones home, I always do what I am asked. I prefer to take off my shoes but always ask first, some don't want you to. In your home, do what is best for you. Post a sign on the front door asking that shoes be removed before entering. Try leaving some cheap slippers there for those who don't like being without footware. You have the right to ask people to take off their shoes in your home.

We always take our shoes off at the door. I leave my slippers at the back door so I can put those on right away. What's wrong with lying on the floor is it's clean? I don't know about the rest of the world but when I play with my children it's usually while we're sitting on the floor.
As for guests they know to take off their shoes at the door. I thought the idea of being a guest was to be courteous to your hosts and respecting their wishes when in their house??

I don't like to wear shoes, so I take them off as soon as I get home. I always walk around the house in my socks.

Well it all depends. At my home home we are told to take our shoes off when we step in the door. I have been to many homes like that. Because of the carpets, and clean floors and it is only curteous.
At my school home though unless it is raining or there is snow outside causing your feet to be wet/damp you can walk around in your shoes. One because our floors are nasty and two it's only courteous not to trail wet footprints around.
It's not rude to ask people to remove their shoes though.

couldn't it be unhygienic if someone had say foot fungus or athlete's foot and walked around the house exposing everyone else to their illness? there is a lot of bacteria on the bottom of a foot especially a sweaty one, so to spread that all over a shared floor is kind of gross too.
