can an internal fire door be installed as a sliding door ie into a stud wall. I am trying to get into my roof but am limited to stair design. This leaves me with the door fitting to the shape of the roof and opening inwards giving just enough height for Regs but anyone taller needs to stoop to get in

If you cut the door that savagely it won't comply with regs anyway. Ask your building control department at county council if you need one. And no you can't fit it as a slider, no matter how well you design the linings, I've tried.

To be efffective a fire door needs to be self closing - normal door construction fitted with a suitable closer will get approval (depending where you are - I assume this is UK) but a self closing sliding door is unlikely and you may end up having to prove it by having a fire test (which is destructive and expensive).

You might have other options - like enclosing at the bottom of the stair. You need to check out Parts B and K for stair design (less onerous rules apply if its only a small room) and note headroom requirements in respect of means of escape. There may be some flexibility as its obviously a conversion but you want people to be able to get out safely in the event of a fire (the raison d'etre of all this).

Any fire check door is to be able to close to keep fires away from other rooms for 1/2 to 1hrs. Could you not form a landing in the loft and re position the door more central to the apex so as a standard size door could fit. Check with your local building control, they are there to help and take pleasure in helping.

you need to know local building codes and fire regulations before you start

Or they could make you rip it all out

fire doors are normally on solid walls.
If the wall burns through before the door it would can of defeat the purpose of the door.

are you sure it is a fire door

Do you need a fire door? Unless there is a complete fire barrier on the stairwell walls, and ceilings common to the attic, a fire door won't do a lot of good.
