DNA has the instructions for making all of the cell's proteins. The proteins handle everything else. So in this way DNA directs all the cell's activities.

There is so much misinformation in these answers, barring ecolink's answer.
DNA is *NOT* made up of amino acids. It is made up of nucleotides. The nucleotides are hooked up in a long chain to form one DNA molecule. The bases on the nucleotides come in four different types, G, T, C, and A. Each G likes to pair with a C, and A likes to pair with T. When you get two DNA molecules with appropriate sequences and line them up running opposite directions the bases will pair up and you'll end up with a double-stranded DNA duplex.
A lot of the DNA sequence does nothing that we can tell, but parts of it are genes and have information that can be transcribed into mRNA (messenger RNA). A protein called RNA polymerase unzips the DNA duplex and then copies the DNA to build up a RNA chain, which is a ribonucleic acid very similar to DNA. The mRNA then goes out into the cell and is translated by ribosomes to produce a protein (which *ARE* made of amino acids!) The proteins produced have many different jobs.
So what DNA does is sit in the nucleus storing information needed to build the structures that keep a cell running.

The DNA is like the brain of the cell. It's too big to get out of the nucleus, so messanger RNA makes copies of parts of the DNA to send messages to the organells about what they are supposed to do. These copies are made when the DNA zipps apart and the mRNA aligns itself on a part of the DNA to read the information. Basically ther DNA tells the cell and all its parts how to do their jobs.

its like what is the function of our brain. dna is basically a structure of amino acids are joined ina particular series {dat's a detailed subject} which doesen,t matches with any others. due to switching on and switching off of genes various cell functions are controlled. like cell differentiation, metabolism. mutations in dna may lead diff. diseases like cancer.

err, i'm still going over this in bio so forgive me if it's wrong.
i contains amino acids in a pattern that is different from most people's, which explains why not a lot of people look the same.
and something about information to the cell.
hopefully someone can work off that and answer you.
sorry if it wasn't much help.
