Personal and political freedom. People assume that the Civil War was all about slaves, but the truth is that everybody had them- North and South. The real issue at the heart of the conflict was that the North wanted to form a federal government and have national rule over every American. The South were accustomed to doing things there own way without alot of the laws and political control that the northern states had adopted over its people. The South rightly resented being told how they could live their lives and as a result, took up arms to defend its land and way of life. If they had won, we would likely NOT have a federal gvt. today, but would have individual states ruling themselves. The Confederacy itself was formed as a response to the Northern aggression and likely would not have developed on its own.
