Okay, I know it seems like a stupid question because obviously it's the cold. But where does the water vapour come from that causes the frost? I could understand it if it had been raining during the night, but we've got really crisp, dry nights at the minute and virtually every morning I'm having to scrape the windows of my car before starting it up. And also, is there any way I can prevent frosted up windscreens?

Thanks in advance...

Frost is a solid deposition of water vapour from saturated air when the air comes in contact with a colder surface, such as the ground, plants or windows.
Air always contains some moisture.During day time as the temperature is more, the air remains unsaturted and hence condensation (or deposition)does not take place. As the temperature becomes less(below zero degree celcius) in the night, the air becomes saturated with the same amount of water vapour and hence solid deposition(Vapour directly becomes ice due to very low temperature) takes place.
You may be knowing that warm air can hold more moisture than cold air.

There is a certain amount of water vapour in the air that we breathe. When the temperature gets too cold then this freezes n there is frost formed :) I use hot water from the tap on my windows instead of scraping them, it works really well as long as your driving off straight away. Otherwise you end up with a lovely sheet of ice on your windscreen hehe! Can't think how you would stop it forming in the first place tho apart from keeping it indoors?

Whats freezing is the moisture in the air, the dew. To keep it off cover your windshield at night or park in a carport or garage. You could also put a sun visor on the outside of your car over the windshield so the dew does not fall on it.

try getting a piece of tarpauling to cover the windscreen and shut it in the doors. this should prevent frozen windscreens

there's always moisture in the air outside, even if it's clear. I hate scaping my car in the morning but i put a large piece of cloth (nylon) over the windscreen. merry crimbo.

The process is called deposition. It occurs when water vapor is deposited as frost, ice crytals, directly onto surfaces.
