I'm 17 and I live in New York State, is it legal to carry a CO2 powered BB gun on me for protection? Is it legal to carry it anywhere in my car? I know you have to be 18 to buy one, but you only have to be 16 to use one. I want to know what the laws for it are in New York. Its not a real firearm with gun powder bullets, just a C02 powered BB gun

ok, in New York now you have to be 18 to buy one, and i'm talking about a 500 feet per second, metal bb shooting, high powered c02 bb gun, that basically looks real. If it can rip through both sides of and aluminum can really easy from a good distance, i'm guessing it can do damage. And whether or not the other person has a gun is the issue. If you pull out a knife, then someone pulls out a gun that to your knowledge is real, are you really going to even think of reaching for your gun, if you have one? I just want to know if its legal in New York State to carry one on you or in the glove box of your car

Every answer so far hasn't helped me at all, its all just a bunch of retards telling me "o its not a good idea" and all that crap. and what is this about a cop?? I have no intentions of even pointing it at a cop! I said I need it for protection. I'll let you know next time a cop tries to hurt me for minding my own buisness and I pull a bb gun on him... can someone please just answer my question without giving me ur freakin opinion (which so far has sucked anyway and hasn't helped me a bit)

You are wanting to carry it for all the wrong reasons my friend. It will not protect you, in fact, it will probably get you shot! A real thug will laugh at you pulling a BB gun for protection and a cop will probably shoot you, no a cop WILL shoot you and then file a report that you were armed.
If it is protection you are looking for, join a boxing club or learn self-defense, or better yet, don't get yourself into a situation where you feel threatened.
good luck...

okay, we are retards, i'll just add this note----
don't be such a little ***** and toughen up. when i was your age i used my fists, and still do, i don't need no gun to make me feel like a man, hit the gym, punk
the problem with your age group today is they all want guns to make them feel tough, lift some weights, learn how to fight *****

You can buy one in NYS when you are 16, unless they have changed the law in the past 5 years. You can carry it, it's not considered a firearm. It may be considered a concealed weapon if you have it hidden in your belt. And you can get into serious trouble using it to threaten somebody.

I STRONGLY reccomend not ever using it for protection. You're not going to hurt anybody with it. It's not going to give you any kind of protection. Trust me, i've been shot with one, bee stings hurt more. It's just going to put you in a dangerous situation. What happens when you pull it and the other person pulls thier .44 magnum and shoots your ***. They're not even going to get into trouble if they have a carry permit, because you just gave them a justified reason to protect themselfs.

Edit:
To answer your question, no, keeping it in your glove box is not illegal. Using it WILL get you into trouble. If somebody starts a fight and you shoot them with it, you will most definately get an assult charge. Using it to intimidate somebody is also illegal.

Also, don't over estimate it's power. Every shot will be slightly weaker than the last because the CO2 cartridge looses pressure. The most it will do is cause a welt in the skin, it's not going to go into somebody.

The reason for guns, is to protect you from a corrupt government not to protect you from your street buddies over childish issues.. Yes it is legal but lets just hope cops or someone else doesn't by accident think it's a real gun and take a shot at you out of self defense.. A Dumb idea.. I suggest you learn what guns are for, they are not for your protection against silly childish HS fights.

NYS OR NYC ?

makes a difference...no BB guns in the City.
see case law link.
Bigger Q is why risk pis_sing someone off with a BB gun ?
just because you tote a BB gun doesn't mean someone else won't have a REAL gun.
-----------------------------------

So you don't like our opinions ? tough - because they reflect what people believe what would/will happen to you if you continue this action. tired of opinions, and yet no comment on the case law link ?

ive had ******* yes actuall straight ******* try and pull them fake *** guns on me before, twice. and i am not talking airsoft pistols, but the metal/lead pellets that are canalured and pointed tipped. strongest you can get for Co2 but even still under extreme adrenaline and anger etc, still doesnt do **** both times i just charged them with my hands and elbows covering my face and upper body while I tackled them to the ground. Instantly dropped the gun and probably broke it. then I just went to town with fist/elbow combo's till that lil ***** was choking on his blood from his nose. I am now an armed security guard and i carry a Glock .40 cal. I really hope one day to run into those same kind of situations again :)

hmm hey im not too sure but from what I heard you won't be in trouble for having one as long as it's not loaded. but if you were caught with one and it's loaded nothin will happen to you all they will do is hold your parents resposible lol.
