When I was living in the New England area, the weather was very harsh. I would set the thermostat on 78-80 auto. Where I live now, the weather doesn't get that cold. Usually I set the thermostat on 65-70 auto. At night before I go to bed, I turn the stat down very low. Sleeping in high heat is very unhealthy for anyone. When you go to bed make sure you put nice warm, comfortable covers over you but not to make you sweat. Just before you arise the next morning, adjust the thermostat back to where you're comfortable.

68 from when my boys get home, usually around 3pm, then at night around 11pm, down to 60.
Then it kicks in at 6am at 70 till 8am then down to 60 while no one is home.
Thats just me though.
The house stays warm during the sunlight hours.
