The piano is not the usual choice for rockers, but a few have pulled it off perfectly. Of these talented musicians, which one uses the piano best in the rock/pop genre?

In no particular order:

Alicia Keys
Elton John
Tori Amos
Fiona Apple
Billy Joel
Ben Folds

Any write-in suggestions would be appreciated, as I'm sure I've missed some. But please, I'm looking for solo-artists, not bands.

Great response so far. Elton seems to be pulling away. By the way, for those of you dissing Tori Amos, you obviously have no ear. She has written, and performs live, some of the most challenging, experimental and genre-busting piano pieces ever written. To dismiss her not only shows your ignorance, but lack of taste as well.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney both played piano often in their music.

In his prime, I would say Elton John was the best *rock* piano player. Both his style, and the style of the genre have changed, and he's much more of a pop artist in recent years.

Write-in : Jordan Rudess. Technically, he's probably a keyboard player, versus a piano player, but he deserves a mention.

Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Johnnie Johnson (Chuck Berry's sideman), Booker T Jones, Greg Allman, Al Kooper and Billy Preston (though they are more organ than piano I guess)

Jerry Lee Lewis Ray Charles Nat King Cole Pete Ham (a better guitarist, but he wasn't bad at piano) Diana Krall Those five are the only ones that come to mind right now though...if I had to pick my all-time favorite pianist, it'd probably be Jerry Lee Lewis at this time.

Good list - Elton John was the most prolific of the modern era, and Billy Joel was excellent as well
But you have to add Fats Domino to start any list with a piano.
Dr John as well.

Tori Amos for sure. Anyone who thinks Alicia Keys is a better pianist than her or Fiona Apple probably knows nothing about actually playing a piano or, for that matter, music in general.

I think Elton John trumps all, with Billy Joel in second. Ben Folds is great and puts on a hell of a how, but he hasn't been around long enough to challenge those other two in my opinion, same with Alicia Keys. Tori Amos and Fiona Apple don't deserve to be listed with the rest.

OMG, you could go all the way back to Fats Waller for that one. You have probably never heard him, though. I hate Elton John. So predictable, very commercial.

There are so many, but of the more recent ones, Tori Amos gets my vote.

Billy Joel is my all time fave artist but when he and Elton John played their 'Face To Face' tours a few years back Billy was quoted as saying

"I wish I could play the piano as well as Elton"

If Billy himself said it, then it's good enough for me!!
