How to build one? Is it as simple as getting 9 wire phone cable, connecting the correct conectors at the ends? I am needing a cable that is 150 feet long, but have not found one on the internet yet. Any help would be appreciated.

The Ethernet cable is the thing that most people screw up when trying to DYI.

For 100Mbps you MUST use cable categorized as CAT5.

For 10Mbps you can use CAT3 or CAT5.

The CAT = category and it's related to the number of twists per foot of the twisted pairs inside the overall jacket. The higher the number of twists, the higher the category number.

Ethernet ports pin out

Pin 1 = Tx+
Pin2 = Tx-
Pin3 = Rx+
Pin4 = unused
Pin5 = unused
Pin6 = Rx-
Pin 7 = unused
Pin 8 = unused.

It's vitally important that Tx+/Tx- are using the same twisted pair (i.e. blue wire with white stripe + white wire with blue stripe). Same for Rx+ and Rx -. It doesn't matter which color the pairs are, it just matters that you use pairs.

If you don't get this correct the cable will not work, even if you happen to get a link signal.

I've troubleshot 100's of networks, 80% or greater % of the time it's a cable issue that is the cause.

The twisted pairs are important.

Flat phone wire doesn't use twisted pairs, it won't work.

PS

Also, if using CAT5 wire you should use CAT5 connectors. Get the connector without untwisting the pairs anymore than possible.

You can get a 150 foot CAT5 cable from - https://www.cablesforless.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=1061

Most electricians or "cable installers" could make you one too.

A phone wire and an Ethernet (Computer cable) are not the same thing.

Phone wires have four copper lines. and are designed for telephone usage. While people do use them in part of a DSL Internet set-up, the thinner telephone wire cannot handle as much data as an Ethernet cable.

Call around and ask computer stores for an "RJ-45" Ethernet cable.

for this arrangement you can buy cat6 cable on a reel and connect rj45's to each ,end careful though as there two ways to wire these one for straight through (ROUTER OR HUB) and one for crossover to another pc straight through starts with white/green and crossover with white /orange known as twisted pair and colour code can be found at ethernet site

Unless you have the tools it may just be cheaper to buy one you know has been certified. They are fairly cheap.
