my husband wants this so he can play his brother across country.
what system/extras do i have to purchase to make that happen??

give tham both a slap and tell them they should've got a ps3 on the other hand any 360 that has a hard drive is fine and then you have to pay to go online.

Get either the Perimum or the Elite. Stay away from the Core and Arcade as the lack of a hard drive will hamper his ability to download new maps and such to use with is brother.
The Premium has a 20GB hard drive and is white. The Elite has a 120 GB hard drive and is black. Unless your husband plans to download a lot of movies and other such material from xbox live (and it doesnt' sound like he will) then the Premium should do the job just fine.
As others have stated, the 360 comes with 1 month of xbox live. After that you will need to purchase a subscription.

Well, if you HAVEN'T bought your Xbox 360 yet, then you should buy the "Go Pro" model. You'll get EVERYTHING your husband needs to play online. Including a free 30-day Xbox LIVE Gold trial. After that trial has expired, you'll need to buy an Xbox LIVE Gold card that lets you play for 13 months (the card says 12+1 months, but 13 is the same thing). Don't worry about the price ($50.00). Trust me, it'll be worth it.

Any of the variants support it, what you need to purchase is Xbox Live Gold membership which is $50 per year in the US.

xbox 360 premium.it comes with the ethernet cord and one month of xbox live.u should also get him a 3-month or 12 month subscritpion 2 xbox live.
