I just use a scotchbrite pad. The discoloration in a thermos I remove by putting a little dish soap in with some hot water and then I shove a wadded paper towel in and shake it around a few minutes.

Baking soda is a non-abrasive, no scent cleaner. Use a wet corner of a dish rag, dip into soda and rub along inside and outside of carafe. You may have to re-wet and dip several times.
Also Regualar Hydrogen Peroxide in your bathroom is an effective cleaner. Use at 50% mix with water and clean as with soap. For bad stains, let sit awhile.

In good restaurants they never use any chemicals to clean the coffee pots. Ice, salt and a couple lemon slices; put them in the pot and swirl it around. The salt is corrosive and the acid in the lemons is a natural stain remover. It works great.

Crushed ice, or cubed (will take a little longer) and about a tablespoon of salt. Put this in a cold pot and swirl. The burnt and lime spots come off. If you think you need to, you can add about a teaspoon of lemon juice. Rinse in cool water and slowly warm it up to hot then just drain. (Restaurant secret!)

I have used Denture tablets before to-day when I left my coffee pot uncleaned in my caravan when I put it in storage for the winter, and I had nothing else to use, it worked a treat.
Soak for a couple of hours in hot water, then rinse well.

Salt.
Pour in some salt (sea salt or larger grained) and scrub with sponge and some water. It scrubs the stains out great. This is something most people just have in the house.

Otherwise the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is wonderful :-)

I use CLR (stands for Calcium, Rust, Lime) and let it sit in the pot for a few hours and it should come right out. Denture tablets also work too.
