Hubby and I just did. It was my hope this was something we could do together, but he'll most likely be going at different hours. I'm not the most outgoing person, and I know if I don't have someone to go with I'll lose interest. From what I've seen of fitness centers over the years, many people just stick to themselves. How would you go about making new friends if you're pretty much a shy person until people get to know you?

Last year I joined at a traditional gym, and I only went a hand full of times, for the reasons you stated. A few years back I joined a curves center, and I met friends there pretty quickly. I went at the same time every day and so did a lot of others, Plus they celebrate with you as you meet your goals. That gets people talking too. It was more of a support group that exercised. I quit there because we moved 400 miles away. Now we have a home gym. We got that after the other membership ended. There weren't any curves facilities close or I would have joined there again.

Have belonged to several over my lifetime. First one for $400, then we moved...HAD to still pay that money. The next one was Balley's. Did VERY well there too, and DID make a few friends but only friends with them there.
Now belong to LA Fitness because it is on my end of town. How often I have gone in the last year? Don't ask! Once the holidays are over, plan to get into a weight program to increase strength and help my old bones!!
OH YES, I DO belong to CURVES, and TRY to go 3 times a week. Have my 300 times shirt!!!

Most people that are serious about getting in/being in shape aren't at the gym to make friends and have a social hour. Most people that work out schedule it into their precious little time they have to go and work out to look/feel better.
I know when I am lifting iron or swimming laps at 6am I do not want to be bothered. I want to do my sets, or swim my laps, and go home.
Good luck to you on your new endeavor.
EDIT- I ALSO WANTED TO ADD- Do not rely on others to go with you to the gym. The reason for this is because then if they can't make it, your unmotivated part of you will use that as EXCUSE to not go, either. NEVER be dependent on others for you going to the gym to work out. Seriously. The motivation must come from WITHIN.

It's been a while since I was a member of a gym. I sure need to be. I have been talking about it for months now, but I too don't want to go by myself. I have asked several of my girl friends to go with me but none of them can seem to do it either. I am going to just do it. I think that once I get in the habit of going it won't matter if have someone going with me.

I would love to go but i owe them money. :(
Go to the class, and pack 5 days of gym clothes IN your car, so that you head there straight from work! Do NOT go home first, you won't have the motivation to get back out!
And I say pack 5 days of gym clothes at once because it's easy to forget one day, and end up skipping the gym becuase you went home for the outfit and...guess what...lost the motivation to leave the house again. :)
Good luck! And tell your husband he needs to go same time as you so you guys can be gym buddies. If he can't adjust his gym time to yours, ask him why? Or change your gym time to his.

I just recently re located to Seattle, so I had to join a new one. I am outgoing, so I just always try and strike up a conversation whilst on the treadmills or wherever else, like the juice bar. The more you make yourself do this, the easier it will get.
