We often talk about great guitar riffs, but some of the greatest songs in history have had very distinctive bass lines. I thought of a few instantly, when I thought of this question...

The Beatles - "Come Together"
The Rolling Stones - "Emotional Rescue"
Megadeth - "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?"

What are some others?

It's been refered to as a bass solo, but to me it's part of the song in CAPS.

Entwistle's full treble, full volume holler in the Who's "My Generation"

Also, John Paul Jones melodic bass work on Zep's "Ramble On"

Some really good ones already listed.

I'll just add a few more:

Rolling Stones - 19th Nervous Breakdown

Beach Boys - Good Vibrations (also some wicked early Theramin work)

Yes - Roundabout

The Beatles - Come Together

Cream - Sunshine of Your Love (you can just play the bass track, and people will immediately know the song)

Almost everything by Pink Floyd has awesome bass work, but for me one of the most memorable is Hey You.

For me -
Japan - Visions Of China, Sons Of Pioneers
The Simple Minds - Themes For Great Cities
The Police - Roxanne
Public Image Limited - Careering
Cream - Crossroads
Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused
The Rolling Stones - Jumpin Jack Flash
The O'jays - For The Love Of Money (I know it's not rock but that phased bass is unforgettable)

Billy Sheehan does an awesome bass riff on a David Lee Roth song called "Ladies Nite in Buffalo" off the Eat Em and Smile Album.

Just about anything Michael Anthony has done and pick any Primus song because Les Claypool is awesome.

Black Sabbath-Nativity In Black...the riff at the beginning of the song is the first thing I ever learned to play on bass guitar.

One of These Days-Pink Floyd...the low, menacing bass line that runs through it really sets the tone for the whole song.

Kickstart My Heart - Motley Crue, plus Nikki Sixx is probably the hotest bass player around (in my humble opinion!)
