I know that birth control pills are sometimes ineffective while taking prescription medication. I just took the first dose of azithromiacin for bronchitis and was wondering if that would make my Mirena IUD ineffective. I know it's different than a pill but I just thought of that this morning. The doctor asked if I was breastfeeding my 6 month old (I'm not) to make sure whatever he prescribed would be safe but didn't ask about what birth control I was on. I called the pharmacy and the tech wasn't really sure; she just said to be extra careful with another method for the 5 days I'm on it and then it should be fine. I called the 800 number for Mirena and had to leave a message, but does anyone know if the prescription will effect the usage of the IUD? If so, will it be back to normal once I stop the prescription or will it take some time for it to get out of my system?

I just got a call back from the 800 number and the woman said all the info showed was that no studies were done on the effectiveness of the IUD with prescription medication, but just to be safe, I should use backup. The sheet with the prescription said it continues to work for a few days after I finish taking it, so I'll just use a backup for 2 weeks just in case. Thanks for your responses so far.

I don't think it should impact anything, but if you are worried, just use another level of protection to help. Azithromycin doesn't have the troublesome interaction to begin with. It also probably won't help with your bronchitis, because most cases of bronchitis are caused by viruses. An albuterol inhaler would have been a better choice.

Because IUDs work by preventing implantation, taking prescription medication shouldn't have any effect on how effective the IUD is.

You need to use back up protection as it makes birth control less effective when on antibiotics. Call your DOCTOR and double check with him/her. Also when you call to ask pharmacy questions you should always speak to the pharmacist not the pharmacy tech.
