Yes! I'm All For Cell Phones In School, I Have One! Beside They Can Come In Handy Incase Of Emergency, Such As When School Activitied Have Been Cancelled & Aranging Transport With Parents To Get Home Safely.
However, During Lessons, I Believe That Cell Phones Should be Switched Of, Its Annoying When People's Phones Go Of, It Disrupts The Lesson. Besideds, You Wouldn Do That Anyway At My School Because It Would Be Confiscated From You.
Times Have Evolves, Cell Phones Have Actually Become An Essential Part Of Many Peoples Lives, Therefore You Cant Really Say That School Kids Shouldnt Have Them, Particuly High School Kids & Stuff.
Plus, You Can Chill During Free Periods(if You Get Them) Listening To Music Privatly.
I Dont Think They Interupt School Life Or Anything,The Majrity of Kids Have Phones Anyway And As Long O fTheyre Turned Off or To Vibrate During Lessons There Is No Real Issue. And Besided, They Could Even Teach Responcibility, Because You have To Make Sure You Dont Lose It & Stuufs!
Some May Disagree, But Thats My View.

Should kids be allowed to use cell phones in school. NO! If there's an emergency, then a parent can call the office and the office can paige for the child to come down there and take the call or to call the parent back. Case senerio, I would not want my child to be in class and tell them, I've just been in a wreck or something like that. At least if I get a hold of the office I can forwarn them and someone will be there to support my children.
Should kids be allowed to have cell phones in school? YES! As long as they are kept put up in bookbags or lockers and turned OFF! Reason being if my child is coming home from school and going to be home alone they can call and say if they have any problems before they get there or before they get on the bus, etc.
Other than that there should not be any exceptions to the rule. They want to text in class let them do it the old fashion way and pass notes back and forth!

No, students should not be able to USE cell phones in school. If they have to make a call, they should go to the office. If they won't , obviously the call wasn't all that important. I'm 13 and every day I see kids texting each other in class. It disrupts the class and isn't fair to the students who want to learn. As for the scanners they started where I go to school, I don't think they are just for cell phones. (Although my school is in a good neighborhood.) However, I think students should be allowed to bring cell phones to school because many walk home or call there parents after school. Sure there is the problem of innapropriate pictures and cheating on tests, but that is something that should be dealt with by the principal. The majority of students who take cell phones to school don't abuse this privelage, so I think it would be unfair to ban them. The funny part about all of this is-I don't even have a cell phone because my parents know I don't need one. Most kids just want a phone because they think it's cool to have one.

I say there are necessary limitations. Students should be allowed to use cell phones after school is over. They should be able to carry it with them, as for safety issues (ie. kids stealing each other's belonging) it's at their own risk and there is almost nothing the school can do for you at that point. Trust me, it has happened to many of my friends and fellow peers before. I am against cell phone use during school activity because it is a distraction, tell me not.
"But what if an emergency comes up" is no excuse. If it were such an emergency then the parent or guardian should contact the main office at the school prior to phoning the child. Privacy is not an excuse neither.
And if a student must be excused from school or call home during any school hours it should be done so through the knowledge of a teacher, nurse, faculty member, or particularly the principle.
We've lived for decades without cell phones and we've survived without them--there is no question.

I think they should be allowed because children should have easy access to a phone in case of an emergency. Also, if they use it in class, it hurts their grade (they punish themselves) because they are missing the lesson and time that could be spent doing their work. I think cell phones should be allowed as long as they are kept on silent during class. If that rule is broken I think there could be a punishment for that but I remember in junior high, cell phones were not allowed and there were at least 3 times when I was left at the school because of carpool confusion. If there had not been a student at the school with a cell phone (even though they were against the rules) i would have been left there with no way to contact my parents.

I dont really see why kids need there phones at school. I have lived with out mine for the past 4 years its only a few hours and plus its a security issue. If some psycho is planning to blow up the school why allow them to have a cell phone so that they can have outside help. Cell phones in class are a distraction.

USE? No.
HAVE? Yes; emergencies do happen, and students should be able to contact someone in an emergency. HOWEVER, keep it out of sight while school is in session.
Furthermore, what about carrying a phone while going to school and coming home from it? What about having a phone during any extracurricular activities?
If you don't allow children to have phones in school, you're ALSO not allowing them to have phones on the way TO school, coming home FROM school, or during any extracurricular activities. That's just plain dangerous.
If I have to travel alone going to and from school, I absolutely want a phone.
If I'm on a team or in a club, and plans suddenly change such that I get out of school earlier or will be stuck later, I want to be able to let my family know.
If I'm on a team traveling to a game, I want to let me family know when I've arrived, where I am, and when I've left.
I know there's the possibility of theft, but that's up to the parent to teach the child to take the necessary precautions and make sure it is very well known that the phone is not to be used in school at all.
If the parent is paying for a phone for a child, the parent does so with the full understanding that something can happen to it, and is willing to trade that risk for the security of having a phone. Schools should not take this decision out of the parents' hands. I don't want the school deciding that they're "protecting the child from theft" if they ban phones. If a parent and a child are willing to take that risk and accept that responsibility, then let them.
I wish I had a cell phone on September 11, 2001. For a time, I didn't know what was going on, and no way to get in touch with my family to know where everyone was. A simple text message, "attack in Manhattan, everyone OK, I'm coming to pick you up" would have really helped.

The consequence of the phone going off in class should be the same as in any high school, teacher takes it until the end of class. Kids in this way learn when it is appropriate to use a cell phone.
As for the cheating issue, any student caught texting during a test should recieve an automatic zero for the entire test (this isn't done much anymore and it teaches that there are no serious consequences for a lapse in integrity) .
As for 'emergencies', parents can still call the office, schools still have their own phone lines.
