Sounds like that teacher has watched "Scary Movie" too many times.

I worked for years in a large. urban, lower-income school district. Our high school (one of many) had 3,000 students. It was not dangerous at all. The students were rarely violent with each other and never with the teachers. However, they were lazy and had no interest in academics, so it is very hard on teachers. The stress level is high for teachers.

Just like any other profession, I think teaching can be as or more dangerous. There is no such thing as a "bad neighborhood" or a "bad part of town" or a "bad city". These so-called bad people can be from everywhere and part of any neighborhood... Studies actually show that small towns are more dangerous than large urban cities in terms of violence and violent behavior.

It depends on where you teach. Last year I taught in a fairly rough neighbourhood, but nothing ever happened. This year I'm in a rather good school, but I have 1 or 2 students that I would not be alone with anywhere in the school for any reason and that I would definitely not turn my back on. I'm not scared of them, but I don't trust them. I know they have attitude, so I gently remind when work has to get done, and I praise as much as I can. Otherwise, I just leave them alone.

How is it possible that only one respondent before me appears to have read the article linked to in the question?

I agree with piggingheck, the teacher in the story should stop her cable tv subscription and get out a bit more.

It depends where you work, the school my boyfriend works at he gets threatened all the time, but he teaches karate so he knows how to protect himself while not harming the child. He has only been attacked once but it wasn't with a weapon of any sort so he was fine.

I must admit that I sometimes worry about him, I will be happier when he finds another job in a calmer school.

In some cases yes, but it can also be very rewarding if you have skills in that area. Most jobs have there down sides and dangers too. Certainly I would say area would play a factor in this as someone else mentioned.

It depends. I had been a teacher for 30 over years. Mostly pleasant, except a few horrible situations. Any job can be dangerous.

It is not any more dangerous than any other job. Whatever happens in the teaching profession that is dangerous can happen at any other job.

Yes, you got to watch the students one day that they will shoot you right in the *** if they can aim, and you can't even get any $$ from them, because they are underage and poor.

Stick with flipping burgers.
