Yes, but the best present is a note thanking the teacher for everything he or she has done for your child. If you do give a gift, make it something small like a gift card for Starbucks.

I'm not sure if it is still "customary", however, something small and not too expensive would be thoughtful. Maybe some home made cookies or candy. If you that is not appropriate then a nice card would be a great alternative. As a retired teacher, the gifts I received were not elaborate, just a small, thoughtful gift that showed the child and parent's appreciation.

My kids are in college now, but what we started doing when they were in elementary school was have the "classmother" ask for contributions from whoever wanted to give and then would get a gift card. Of course, regardless of whether the family contributed or not, all of the childrens' names went on the card. That worked out well for everyone, because the teacher would get a nice gift card to use on whatever she wanted instead of a collection of mugs and trinkets she didn't need, and parents were happy to give $5 toward a group gift because you can't really get anything decent by yourself for that.
I guess schools may have their own policies about this.

A small gift card works well and can be hidden in a card, so that it doens't look like a gift to others. Most of the schools around here have a "no baked goods" policy all year round, so be careful of sending baked goods. And, as an educator that has received baked or homeade items, I can tell you, they usually get tossed. Sorry, just being honest.

At my children's grade school the teachers have a wish list for things they would like for the classroom. Baked goods and a flowers work well too.

I got my child's teacher a scented candle. Just a small token to wish her Merry Christmas. Good luck. 2D

I usually buy my daughters teacher something she can use for the classroom such as paper, pencils, desk pad, etc...

This year we got the teacher something she could use herself - a dove gift set which includes soap, lotion, etc...

My daughter is in 4th grade.

(She also gets books for the classroom from us throughout the year when they have book fairs)
