Because the system board is only deisgned to hold a PII, you would have to replace the system board before you could replace the processor. The new system board would require more up to date memory, so the memory from the only board would be useless.

That is assuming that the new board will fit in the HP case. HP has a bad habit of using non-standard size system boards (so none of the connectors on the new board will line up with the holes in the current case), so you might have to drill new holes in the case, move the fan(s), etc.

Also HP tends to use non-standard power supplies. The connectors would probably not fit your new system board. So you would have to replace the power supply also, and hope you can find one that will fits, as it is a non-standard size.

So...
New Processor ($150)
New System board ($150)
New memory ($150)
New power supply ($50)
Total: $500
... and then are still using a how many year old hard drive, CD drive, floppy, etc - just waiting to die next month.

OR
New Dell with monitor. mouse and keyboard starting at about $350-400.

Not worth trying to upgrade the Pentium II

You can upgrade A) the processor...but in that case you also have to modify (at minimum)
B) the motherboard (Pentium 2 motherboards won't work with p3, p4, or celeron processors)
C) likely the ram (pc100 isn't compatible with current mother boards, DDR or DDR2 will likely work)

Between those costs, it's almost cheaper to get a cheap business PC IE a Dell Vostro or cheap Compaq desktop for around $300 (with a not-so-great video and sound card or even no sound card at all) and then using your current hard-drive, video/sound cards and such in the extra slots.
-----------------------
Far as cheap upgrades (note this won't do nearly as much) get a faster video card (say a $70 N-Vidia card) and lots of extra pc100 ram (up to 500megs or so in size...I think that's all that a p2 board will accept).

You can download all the software free which will turn an old Pentium II into a 'hardware' network firewall.

Otherwise you would be throwing good money at a pile of junk if you tried to upgrade it.

im pretty sure thats not two AGP slots, probably a AGP and a side card connection...

anyway, with that board id say try updating the processor to a P3...P3s did go up to 1 ghz and you might be able to do that...also upgrade the ram...back then you should at lease be able to upgrade to 768mb of ram....
