Please help me! I just bought a desktop for the first time (I always had laptops before) and I cannot turn up the volume! The buttons on neither the keyboard nor the computer itself are working, and I am getting NO SOUND! Do I need speakers, or does the computer have built-in volume like a laptop? Please help me, I want to get this done ASAP!

Ok, well how do I know if I have built-in speakers or not? And I have Windows Vista, and I have never really used that except for a few times, so I am twice as confused! I can't get ANY sound from anywhere! HELP!

Although the PC has a built-in speaker, it's not very useful for listening to music, etc.

You should purchase a pair of external speakers - or get a monitor with built in speakers.

In the meantime - just plug a set of headphones into the headphone jack. This can be located on the front or back of your computer (usually a green colored jack).

If you have no sound is coming out of that, then your speaker/earphone output may be muted.

In Windows XP -
Open the Control Panel.
Click on Sounds and Audio Devices
Make sure the "Mute" box is not checked
Slide the Device Volume bar to the right (toward high).

Which volume are you turning down, the single volume control in the tray, or one of the volume controls in the Volume Control applet? Are you using external speakers? Speakers, and speaker wires, can pick up transmissions from radio or TV stations if they're strong enough. Do you live near one? (Turning the computer volume down, or even turning the computer off, would have no effect if that's what's happening. The speakers wouldn't even have to be plugged into the computer.)

most desktops have a built in speaker, but it is never that good, best get yourself some speakers, goto the control panel and click on sounds and audio devices and configure your sound settings from there.
