Since there were so many openings needing to be filled and not enough men to fill them all, women had to take on roles that had been traditionally men's.
Many became nurses (WAGS and WAVES). Some took up factory work (hence, "Rosie the Riveter"), many took over positions in companies that had been done by men and needed filling.
After the war, many didn't want to give up their jobs. Some had to, others didn't. World War II did a lot to help give our society the equality in work status that exists today.

In america women were nurses, and did admin work.
In Russia women were allowed in combat. They were trained as snipers. Many of them after the war went back to their normal lives while others stayed.

Women both served in the military and stepped into formerly male jobs on the "home front." I think this site will really help you.

There was also a women's pilot program. Check out this link. http://wwii-women-pilots.org/
I don't believe they ever flew combat missions, but they may have flown supply missions.
