John Adams was George Washington's Vice President. In those days whoever came second in the Presidential elections was made Vice-President, Of course that was before anger based politics and before the party system we have today.

John Adams.

He did very little as VP, as most VPs do, and was elected the second president after Washington's two terms.

Often seen as a poor president, and difficult to work with, but he had very big shoes to fill. He oversaw the completion of Washington DC and was the first to deal with serious foreign policy--the threat of war by France--and lost popularity when he refused to go to war with France.

His attempt at a second term, against Jefferson in 1800, resulted in his coming in third behind Jefferson and Burr. This election resulted in the 12th Amendment.

Revisionist history tends to show that Adams received a "bum rap" for his actions as president and that he did indeed make sound decisions in the best interest of the country.
