When this "merry x-mas/happy holidays" thing came about a few years ago it annoyed me, but over time I've come across people that have helped me understand. I believe that retail stores should say "Happy Holidays" As far as I am concerned I love Christmas, but there are so many other kinds of religions out there that don't believe in "Christmas", but the followers do shop, and will choose the stores that they feel understand that fact. So personally I prefer Merry christmas, but from a business P.O.V It's smarter to have employees say Happy Holidays.

Does it really matter? I think this quote from Ben Stein does a nice job with this topic:
"I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.
It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, "Merry Christmas" to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away."

I think they should say Happy Holidays because we have become so diverse in our country that not all are celebrating Christmas. To say happy holidays sums up whatever you are celebrating if anything. This way no one will be offended by the reply. Jehovah Witnesses don't celebrate anything but they can recognize that this season is a season of holidays for others. So Happy Holidays to you and yours. Sexc

I think they should say whatever each individual employee feels comfortable saying. We should not be offended by people of different beliefs wishing them a merry or happy whatever it is they celebrate. I don't think companies should regulate it at all. I would not be offended by an individual wishing me a Happy Hanukkah, but I might take offense to a business banning the use of Merry Christmas (or Happy Hanukkah or Happy Kwanzaa or whatever).

Retail stores should definitely say Merry Christmas. And Happy Hanukkah. And Happy Kwanzaa. And Welcome Winter Solstice. And whatever else I've missed!
Everyone has a right to celebrate their beliefs.

Happy holidays is better because it includes everyone. Jews don't celebrate Christmas, and other religions don't celebrate Christmas, so if they simply say holidays, it covers everyone. However, someone is sure to be offended no matter what, because ppl need things to complain about.

i was talking about this in a class yesterday and you're supposed to say Happy Holidays because not every one celebrates Christmas. but there are also atheists who don't celebrate anything at all, and they could get offended by someone saying Happy Holidays.
personally, i think people should just suck it up. i celebrate Christmas, but if someone said Happy Kuanza to me, i'd be like "hey, you too!" i wouldn't make a big deal about it.

Merry christmas because thats what it is. it may offend other religions but what about christians dont we have the right to celebrate our holiday without fear of upsetting people, you dont hear them complain when they have christmas day off we dont get their holidays off we still have to work. All religions should have the freedom to celebrate their holidays without upsetting people just get on with your life and leave others theirs
