Formica laminate is used for covering mdf but i have no idea where to get it from. google just brings up already laminated mdf. Not fussed on paint as it just doesnt look as good.
Any suggestions?

Without knowing at all where you are, in the STATES, both HD and Lowes, sell it in 4 x 8 sheets at a choice of MIL thickness on occasion.

Certainly to make the install happen you'll need a Router at least.

If you go with Mica I have a suggestion. A water based contact adhesive. Dupont might be one Mfg.?
What I use is a pleasing aqua color, the consistency or milk, applies the same, initially cleans up with water, probably dries faster, and is less noxious than the laquer based contact, and holds as well when properly applied and allowed to set.

If you are in Singapore, go to Home-Fix Store and look for the Laminated paper the name sound like Frianloda it is hanging on the wall "don't mistake for the window shade". Hope, that can help you.

Can get formica at home centers or counter top shops, may have to order the color you like. Have installed it many times.

Behr Paints (buy it at home Depot) makes a semi-gloss (or even matt) kitchen cabinet paint which you can get in white or any tint you want. It is designed to be able to be scrubbed without wearing off.

You can buy rolls of iron-on edging tape at your DIY store. I think Formica is no longer made.

You could use that wood grain paint and varnish over it maybe?
