To play songs on an iPod, you must put them on the iPod using iTunes. I assume you have installed Apple's iTunes, free from Apple.com. iPods do act as USB drives, but won't play files added that way.
So you download songs from Limewire to some directory. You can find where they go in Limewire's menu along the top - Tools - Options - select Save on the left box, (top) and the save directory will show.
Hint - avoid sharing any songs in the USA so you don't get sued - so the second location, "Share" should point to an empty directory. Oh, and when you close Lime it sits in the system tray (lower right) still sharing. Be sure to right-click and close that, so you're not accidentally sharing stuff for the next few days.
So when you download songs, they go into the Save directory. Typically this is "C:\Documents and Settings\\Lime".
From iTunes, go to the top menu - File - Add Folder to Library: then find the folder that has the downloaded files. Import them into the iTunes library. (iTunes bug - can't "Add file" more than 3 at a time - hence add folder)
If (IF!!!!) you have not monkeyed with iTunes settings, it has re-arranged all your music into a single directory tree. So when you import the songs, they will be copied (not moved, but copies made) into the iTunes library. Be sure there is a copy in the iTunes directory; if there is, then once you're done delete from Limewire - or else you'll import them again next time you do this and end up with 2,3, or 4 copies of the same song.
Most Limewire downloads are not well tagged. Go into the iTunes "Recently Added" list, and make sure details like Song Name, Artist, Album are correct. There is an option in the iTunes menus to "Get Album Artwork" if the album name is correct - or else you can look up, copy and paste the album art from Amazon.com.
Finally, plug in the iPod (or it could have been plugged in all along.) From the music list - "Music", or "Most recently added" or whatever - Drag and drop the song(s) onto the iPod name showing on the right in iTunes.
(Depends - I have a 60Gb iPod, so I just add everything. For the smaller ones, 4Gb etc., you may want to be selective. I find it easier to create a playlist "iPod2", drag the song names into there, then drag the entire contents onto the iPod in one shot and walk away while it's loading. Creating playlists of favorites or "mood" songs is a whole 'nother lesson.)
A lot of work, yes, but what do you expect for illegal free songs?
("Can I get sued for downloading?" Technically, yes, I suppose - but every lawsuit so far has been over people sharing songs for others to download.)

ok there are a few things to consider here. #1 download iTunes and make sure you have it set up for your iPod. remember iTunes is the software that allows the iPod to communicate with your laptop.
i know that you said you downloaded songs to limewire. what you have to do is import the songs to the iTunes music library. to do this you have to open iTunes and select file from the upper toolbar. from the drop down window that appears select import file and select the song from the limewire folder that you want to import. this will pull the song into iTunes and when you connect the iPod it will then sync the song to the iPod but it has to be in your iTunes library first.
there are a few things to understand about limewire before you use it. it is illegal. you are infringing upon copyright when you share songs from that site. it is riddled with viruses. so if you choose to continue to use it right click on the music file and scan for viruses BEFORE you open or transfer the file to iTunes or your iPod. if not, you risk being infected with something that can ruin your computer and the iPod.
good luck - iPods are great fun!!

You have to have the Itunes program in order to transfer music to your Ipod. Go to the Itunes website (click on the link below), and you can download the program for free. Just enter your email address, and click the Download Itunes Free button (link provided below).
If you are using Internet Explorer, choose the Run option. If you are using Firefox, it will download the program to your desktop. If you use Firefox, double-click the downloaded Itunes icon on your desktop, and follow the instructions. If you use Internet Explorer, and choose Run, the installation process will start immediately.
