I saw a woman on tv a while back claiming she could understand what babies wanted by the sounds they make, shes written a book and the mothers that took part in an experiment said it was correct, do you believe this?

having two children i believe it to a point. it was all common sense, different sound for different areas of pain, wind etc.
i know my little ones cried with a certain sound for various things and i learnt which cry meant which cause.
anyone can understand their own baby's crying, if they listen enough, but to understand someone else's child would take a bit more practice i think!
edit: caitlin, babies do tell you when they are ready to potty train...

I agree some of the other answers - a mom (and dad) will get to know their own child's cries and sounds. They will cry differently for hunger vs a diaper change vs boredom. Maybe there are similarities between babies (I am not sure since I only have one). Not knowing what this woman does and what her book is about - I can't say for sure if I believe her or not. Maybe she is teaching parents how to pick up on the clues in their child's cries - teaching the common sounds that babies make? Even so - she is making money off of first time parents who don't know any better!
If you really want to shell out some money - just pick up the Why Cry Baby Cry Analyzer - this is a real product that is supposed to tell you your child's needs or mood based on its cry. In my opinion, if you need one of those - then you should be spending some more time with your child.
Here is one place you can buy the "Why Cry": http://www.showeryourbaby.com/whycrbacran1.html

I saw that on Oprah. The woman could distinguish between a baby's cries --supposedly there are differences in the pitch and volume of all babies' cries to tell us if they want food, to be changed, etc. It can be true since I can tell when my son needs something. However, I don't think anyone should waste their money on this book because it is really is maternal instinct in all us mothers. I, for one, cannot tell what someone else's baby wants when they're crying. When I hear a baby crying in the mall or at the grocery store, I cringe, but when I hear my son crying when we're out and about, I can tell it's him and know what he wants.

Well, I have 6 month old baby and I can understand her not only by sounds she makes and even how she looks at me. That I understood from 1st week of her life. I think mothers can feel their babies. I cannot feel the same for all babies, so I would say that is kind of maternity thing.

Within the 1st couple weeks...maybe 3 at the most I could tell what my baby needed for the most part. Her hungry cry sounds different from her tired cry. Her "change me now!" cry is different from that pitiful "I am bored, please pick me up cry." And the pain cry is terrible...I only have heard that one when she got her shots and if she had really bad gas like she did in the beginning.
So anyway, moms know their babies. This lady is just figuring out a way to make money...kinda like that Sylvia Brown lady on Montel =)

If you pay attention to your baby you will know as well, what he/she wants and needs. But I can't see a stranger knowing YOUR baby, unless they spend an awful lot of time with them. Although there are many things, where babies make the same signals liek when they are hungry. Also anyone with experience may be able to pick up SOME signs from any baby. But MOM knows HER baby best.

Most women can distinguish various squawks after a while. Generally "Bored" "Tired" "Nappy" and "hungry". Sometimes "Get off me! Leave me a lone!"
It isn't rocket science, really

presumably you've never had a baby. Yes of course you can work out what they want by the sound they are making.

if you pay close enough attention to your baby you will know what it wants by the sounds it makes too.
