We study and learn History so taht we can take what we learn from the past and improve it for the future. Some would say that we study history so that we can learn from it and avoid committing the same mistakes again. We study history so that we can appreciate the present. The people in the past tried so hard to make the present as it is now.

At the beginning of all of his history courses one of my profs would always ask this question - why do you even bother learning about history. We would always generate the "required" list - so we won't repeat the mistakes of the past, so we can understand our world, etc.
Then he would always get a little grin on his face and ask - why do you REALLY study history? He would answer his own question if no one volunteered - because it's fun! (and utterly fascinating most of the time - truth IS stranger than fiction). :)

because history repeats itself in many ways. we learn from the past happenings. Eg; The atom bomp havoc & the aftermath. unless we know,we will not avoid mistakes. The great civilaisation ,how they lived in hormony, created many awe inspiring structures still a puzzle to the great architects of Today.

History is a crucial subject. In my opinion it is as important as literacy and Mathematics. People and leaders around the world base their decisions on what they have learned from past events; that is, the proof is in the pudding.
Without actually arguing the issues, I think clear examples are found in current world events and issues.
Great sums of money is being spent by the United States in its intervention in Iraq. From some people's points of view, including President Bush, it was important to stand up to a classic dictator like Saddam Hussein. Many times, Adolph Hitler was mentioned--why? Only and understanding of the history of WWII gives us real insight into this thinking.
Nazi Germany under the rule of Hitler was the direct cause of global catastrophe and the deaths of tens of millions of people. At the outset, Hitler's Germany was weak in comparison to the Western Allies (France, the United Kingdom, and the United States). But, instead of standing up to him they tried to appease him. The then U.K. prime minister Neville Chamberlain has become the icon of stupid naivite by his waiving of a signed statement of peace by Hitler and exclaiming that he had achieved "peace in our time".
We learned from History that standing up to a tyrant now, even at the expense of war, averts catastrophe later. And, that not standing up to dictators emboldens them to continue on in greater and greater threatening acts.
My point is not whether this point of view is right or wrong. Rather, without an understanding of contemporary History, in this example, one cannot understand the arguments, thinking and motivations presented and one cannot intelligently participate in the discussion.

History provides lessons that can help us understand the present and predict the future.
A simple analogy, If you had never burned yourself on the stove in the past, would you be as careful today around hot things?

It is a great way of knowing where your country has come from and where it is going. It's nice to know about the world and customs. You can understand the struggles that each country has gone through in the past. It's also good to know if you are going on a game show. LOL!

bit vague, but history rocks. it's interesting, you'll sound educated in conversations, its very relevant to alot of things, it prooves to future employers that you can write well, its not all about dates and its a subject that will easily be projected from you. e.g. if you took maths and did really well its not always obvious on first impression that you're intelligent, how often do you talk about maths?? not the case with history. i'd seriously recommend it, its my favourite subject along with english. plus its easy to remember cuz its just one big long story.

We learn history because it helps us to know our forefathers. What they did for our nation. It creates the unity and feeling of pride in our heart. It helps us to understand the past mistakes of rulers and warns us not to repeat the same.It helps us to think of our future.

We learn from our past, if we ignore examples of our for-fathers then we are destined to repeat the past.
