The term Down Under is a colloquialism referring to things Australia. It locates Australia as "The land Down Under" because unlike Africa and South America, that continent lies totally within the southern hemisphere and typically world maps and globes show Antarctica at the 'bottom', with north appearing to be "up" and south appearing to be "down".

hi The term Down Under is a colloquialism referring to Australia. It locates Australia as "the land down under" because it lies totally within the southern hemisphere. The persistence of the media use of the term has led to its wide embrace and usage. The Men at Work song "Down Under" became an instantly recognisable, patriotic rallying song. The famous Australian boxing champion Kostya Tszyu was nicknamed "The Thunder From Down Under". According to Roger Ebert's tongue-in-cheek Glossary of Movie Terms, "No film set in Australia is allowed to use the word Australia in its title where "Down Under" is an acceptable alternative. For example, we don't get The Rescuers in Australia or Quigley in Australia." Good luck

I learnt that in the northern hemisphere all the coundtries are wealthy such as America and Britain, whereas in the southern hemisphere it tends to be poorer, such as Africa and Brazil, however, Australia is one of the wealthy countries and is in the southern hemisphere. That's why it's called down under.

Australia is termed "Down Under" due to it's location on the globe (when north is up). It is percieved to be at the bottom of the world. Hence "down under".

I think it has to do something with the geographical location of Australia when compared to India.

If you look at a world map or globe, you will see that we are at the bottom of it, therefore 'down under'!
