I heard today that a movie is going to be made of the Hobbit, but it will be split into two parts the Hobbit and a sequel, but surely the Lord of the Rings is the sequel...does anyone know what's going on?

Have you ever read the Hobbit? Its HUGE! And there are so many details! Because they have already made the Lord of the Rings, everyone is probably curious about the real story of how Bilbo got the ring in the first place. And there are many allusions to the Hobbit in LOTR. Like when Frodo says "Before you came along we Baginses were very well thought of. Never had any adventures...." And then Gandalf says "If you're referring to the incedent with the dragon, I was barely involved. All I did was give your uncle a little nudge out of the door." People have no idea what he is talking about! There are so many details and they probably want to get them all in there! Also, I agree that they probably want to make twice the money! Hope this helps

It's not being split. It seems to be proposed as the Hobbit in the first film, and then a bridging story between it and the Lord of the Rings as the second film.

As I understand it, the second film will use details extracted from Tolkien's other tales that were completed and published by his son. I guess it will cover things like the attack on Dol Guldur and the corruption of Saruman. Perhaps even the back story of Aragorn. See the TORN source for more speculation.

The Hobbit will probably be spilt because it would detract from the story if they tried to squeeze it down into one movie. Or it could be to maximise profits.

I don't know, but I would guess at several reasons.

1) They feel they cannot adequately cover the story in detail in one film.

2) They are looking to make money twice.

1. To do justice to the detailed storyline.
2. To heighten the suspense, and make us come back a SECOND time to spend our $$$.

Its probably because they want to include a lot if detail as it is studied in many schools. Just a guess....
