My husband and I have narrowed it down from about 35 names to 5 and can't decide on which one we like the best. The middle name will be Steven, because it's my husbands middle name and his father's middle name. How would you rank the following names? TIA!!

Drew
Mason
Braden
Jackson
Ethan

Well, first off, congratulations! I like all of the names that you and your husband have been thinking about. Since the middle name will be Steven, I think Drew makes for the best first name. Drew Steven just rolls off of the tongue nicely. The other names are good, but since they all end with with same sound as Steven, it sounds just a bit redundant, though not exactly bad per se either.

Formal, strictly-masculine Andrew Steven -- with Drew as an informal (and unisex) nickname -- would definitely get my vote, both in general (not as trendy or overused as most of the others) and especially with the middle name Steven (I'd avoid a first name also ending in -en/an/on ... a tad repetitive).

Popularity aside, Ethan would be my next favorite, but unfortunately the one I'd be least likely to use with Steven. Not only the same N ending, but a near-rhyme, making the name in full sound eerily like "even Steven." ;) The sort of odd play on names you might want to avoid.

The others are a toss-up, really. All equally trendy, common choices. All two syllables ending in N (so not ideal with Steven). I do love that you've used the proper spelling of Braden, for what it's worth, and would actually love the name aside from the Aidan, Caden, Hayden, Jadon, etc. trend (not to mention the horridly created versions, such as Dreydon, Shaidynn or Zaydon) ... but be aware that it will constantly be lumped in with the rest at the moment.

Although most of those names are nice (though I can't say as much for Braden, which sounds made-up and trendy--sorry!), you'd probably want to go with Drew to avoid the duplication of the "en" sound at the end of the name.

Drew. (Although I'd make it "Andrew Steven"...unless your last name begins with an 'S'!)

All the other names end with an "-en" sound like Steven. Too sing-song-y for me!
