I must declare my major at school and am really torn between a sure thing job wise and doing something else. I have picked Geography as a sure thing (I already have a job offer in that field) but I also love English, History and Anthropology, all of which have no real prospects in the real world. Should I go for the sure thing (even though it is somewhat boring) or go out on a limb and go for English major? I must be able to get a decent job right after college though as I am a single parent and only source of income.

I think the most important thing is an interesting career. I'm 55 now and retired, but I never liked my career. I wish I had gone into oceanography or some thing exciting.

You do know you can change your major right? If you really want to major in English, major in that. You will do much better in something you want to be doing as opposed to something you think you "should" be doing. Take it from someone who went through 5 years of school, graduated, and realize that she had majored in the wrong thing, because it was what I was expected to major in. I would have been much happier had I changed my major after my sophomore year- just remember you can always do that. You may end up finding something else you never even considered that you love while you are there too!

Find a way to make a living at what you love. You will be happier. Another choice would be to double major or major in Geography and minor in english.
